DANCES WITH THE WINDS
Metro Series Concert #2
Image and design: Adam Finch
BPO’s second mainstage concert for 2026 offers a program of drama, colour, and emotional power.
Opening the evening is Aram Khachaturian’s Masquerade Suite, which offers a mix of dances and sentimental movements that give life to the play’s setting of 1830s aristocratic St Petersburg. Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s flute writing, which traverses haunting lyricism, hushed and mysterious tones and a carnival-like atmosphere, is brought to life by Brisbane’s own Tim Munro. The concert culminates in Shostakovich’s gripping fifth symphony, a work of profound political tension and enduring cultural impact.
